The best time to visit Pakistan depends on where you go: the northern mountains are at their best from April to October, while Sindh, the cities of Punjab and the Balochistan coast are most comfortable from November to March. This month-by-month guide matches your dates to the right region, festival or trek.
Best month to visit Pakistan: the short answer
Pakistan has two main travel seasons. Spring to autumn belongs to the north, when the high passes open and the valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are green. Winter belongs to the south, when the plains and coast cool down. Because the country spans both, there is a good trip in every month. Altitude matters as much as the calendar, and the same week can be hot on the plains and cool in Hunza.
Spring: March to May
- March: the last cool weeks for heritage tours in Punjab and Sindh, and the first cherry blossom in lower Hunza at the end of the month.
- April: blossom season peaks in Hunza in the first half of the month, and the Khunjerab route to China reopens for the season.
- May: the Kalash valleys celebrate Chilam Joshi in mid-May, and Swat's orchards are in full leaf.
Summer: June to August
- June: the Babusar Pass and the Deosai plains usually open from mid-June, and trekking season begins in earnest. The Shandur Polo Festival has been held in June in recent years.
- July: the plains get monsoon rain, so the high valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan are the place to be.
- August: wildflowers on Deosai, stable roads in the north and the Kalash Uchal harvest festival later in the month.
Autumn: September to November
- September: clear skies and settled weather, excellent for treks and the Karakoram Highway.
- October: poplar and apricot trees turn gold in Hunza and Skardu, usually from mid-October. Deosai closes with the first heavy snow.
- November: travel shifts south to Lahore, Taxila, Peshawar and Mohenjo-daro as the heat fades.
Winter: December to February
The northern passes are snowbound, but this is the best season for the south. Karachi is mild, Sindh's heritage sites are pleasant to explore, and the Makran coast and Hingol National Park in Balochistan are at their most comfortable. Upper Swat becomes a snow destination, with skiing at Malam Jabba. See December for current departures.
