August

August

August is high summer in the mountains, and the best places to visit in Pakistan in August are the Kalash valleys for the Uchal harvest festival, Skardu and the Deosai Plains, Hunza and the Karakoram Highway. Monsoon rain soaks the plains, so Adventure Planners builds spare days into every August route.

Pakistan in August at a glance

August is the second peak month of the monsoon. Punjab, Islamabad and much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have heavy showers and humid heat, and landslides can cut the Karakoram Highway or the Babusar road for a time. Baltistan receives far less of this rain, and the northern valleys are warm by day and cool at night.

Festivals and events in August

  • Independence Day (14 August): a national holiday, with flag-raising ceremonies, fireworks and streets dressed in green and white.
  • Uchal, around 20 to 22 August: the Kalash summer festival gives thanks for the wheat harvest and the season's crops with dances, music and rituals in the valleys near Chitral. Some rituals are private, so follow your guide's lead on where to stand and when to take photographs. Our 8D 7N Uchal Festival tour is built around it.

Best places to visit in Pakistan in August

  • Kalash valleys: green orchards along the river and the Uchal celebrations.
  • Deosai Plains: the flowers are still out, and it is the last full month before the plateau turns gold.
  • Hunza and Khunjerab: a classic ride up the Karakoram Highway to the Chinese border. See the 13 Days Riding Experience on Karakoram Highway.
  • Trekking: high routes are open, and our 11 Days Hiking and Trekking Adventure runs this month. For K2 Base Camp, August is one of the two most reliable months on the Baltoro Glacier.
  • Skardu: Shigar, Khaplu and the lakes around town, with dry weather while the south is wet.
  • Fairy Meadows: green pasture below the Raikot Face of Nanga Parbat, reached by jeep from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway.

Northern areas weather in August: travel tips

  • Roads: we check road reports each morning and reroute when a section is closed.
  • Clothing: a light rain jacket, breathable layers and something warm for Deosai.
  • Festival dates: book early if you plan to see Uchal, as the Kalash valleys have few rooms.
