October

October

October is autumn colour season, and the best places to visit in Pakistan in October are Hunza and Skardu, where poplar and apricot trees turn gold, plus Islamabad and Lahore as the heat finally fades. It is also the last month for high roads such as the Deosai Plains before snow closes them.

Pakistan in October at a glance

October is dry and clear across most of the country. The plains cool down, making Islamabad pleasant again, and the northern valleys have crisp, sunny days with cold nights.

Snow starts to close the high roads. The first heavy fall usually shuts the Deosai Plains around mid-October, and the jeep road to Fairy Meadows closes in late October. The Babusar Pass normally stays open until November, though an early snowfall closed it in mid-October 2023.

Since 2016, a dense haze has settled over Lahore from the last week of October into mid-November. Air quality improved in 2025, but we still plan Lahore days with it in mind.

Best places to visit in Pakistan in October

  • Hunza: autumn colour peaks through most of October in Karimabad, Gulmit and Passu, as poplar, walnut and apricot trees turn yellow and orange.
  • Skardu and Shigar: golden trees against bare, brown mountains and very clear skies.
  • The Karakoram Highway: dry roads and autumn light make October a fine month for the 13 Days Riding Experience on Karakoram Highway.
  • Fairy Meadows: early October is the last reliable window before the jeep road closes for winter.
  • Islamabad and Lahore: cooler weather returns to the Margalla Hills trails, and the evening flag ceremony at the Wagah border near Lahore is more comfortable to watch.

Is Hunza open in October

Yes, and it is one of the best months to visit. Hotels and guesthouses are open, the Karakoram Highway is clear and there is less monsoon disruption than in summer. Our 11 Days Lahore Islamabad Hunza Skardu tour and the 11 Days Hiking and Trekking Adventure both run in October.

October packing tips

  • Warm layers: a down jacket, hat and gloves for mornings and evenings in the mountains.
  • Camera gear: spare batteries, since cold drains them quickly.
  • City clothing: light layers for Islamabad and Lahore, where days are still mild.
  • Flexibility: an early snowfall can close a pass overnight, so keep a day in hand.

Plan your October trip
