Sindh

Sindh tour packages take you through Pakistan's southern province, from the port city of Karachi to the royal tombs of Makli, the tiled Mughal mosque at Thatta and the 4,500-year-old streets of Mohenjo-daro beside the Indus. Adventure Planners plans guided Sindh tours with local drivers, guides and comfortable stays.

Why visit Sindh

Sindh is where Pakistan's history runs deepest. The Indus Valley city of Mohenjo-daro was laid out around 2500 BCE, and in 1980 it became the first site in South Asia on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Later centuries added the Makli necropolis, the Sufi shrines of Sehwan and Bhit Shah, and the 93 domes of the Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta.

It is also Pakistan's most urban province. Karachi, the provincial capital and the country's largest city, brings colonial architecture, seafront evenings at Clifton and some of the best street food anywhere in Pakistan.

Places to visit in Sindh

  • Karachi: Mazar-e-Quaid, Frere Hall, Mohatta Palace and the National Museum of Pakistan, which holds the Priest-King statue from Mohenjo-daro.
  • Makli: a UNESCO-listed ridge of royal tombs dating from the 14th to the 18th century, just outside Thatta.
  • Thatta: the old capital of lower Sindh, known for the blue-tiled Shah Jahan Mosque, with Keenjhar Lake a short drive north.
  • Mohenjo-daro: the excavated Bronze Age city near Larkana, with its Great Bath, citadel mound and site museum.
  • Sehwan Sharif and Bhit Shah: two great Sufi shrines, honouring Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and the poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
  • Ranikot Fort: walls that run for about 32 km across the hills of Jamshoro district, often called the Great Wall of Sindh.

Best time to visit Sindh

  • November to February: the best months. Days are warm and dry, nights are cool, and migratory birds gather on Keenjhar Lake.
  • October and March: good shoulder months for Karachi and the coast, though the interior is already warm.
  • April to September: hard going inland, where temperatures often pass 45°C in May and June. Monsoon rain reaches Karachi from late June to September.

How to get around Sindh

Karachi's Jinnah International Airport is the usual starting point. Makli and Thatta are about 100 km east of the city, around two hours by road, so they fit easily into a day. Mohenjo-daro lies roughly 420 km north of Karachi near Larkana, which makes it a long drive best split with an overnight stop.

Karachi is also the gateway to the Makran coast. Hingol National Park in Balochistan is about 200 km away, and our 8 Days Balochistan Hingol National Park Tour explores its rock formations and beaches.

Sindh tours we run

With only a weekend, the 2 Days Karachi & Makli tour covers the city highlights and the necropolis. For the full sweep of Pakistan's past, the 15D 14N Cultural And Heritage Expedition Across Civilizations in Pakistan links Sindh's ancient sites with Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
