January

January

The best places to visit in Pakistan in January are the mild south, from the Karachi coast to Hingol National Park in Balochistan, and the snowbound north for travellers who want frozen valleys and empty roads. Adventure Planners runs winter trips to both, with local drivers who know the conditions.

Pakistan in January at a glance

January is the coldest month of the year across most of the country. In Skardu and Hunza, nights fall well below freezing and snow covers the valley floors, while Islamabad and Lahore have cool, often grey days. Sindh and the Balochistan coast are the exception: Karachi stays mild, with daytime highs in the mid-20s Celsius.

Winter fog is common across the Punjab plains. It can close motorways after dark and hold up night flights, so we leave slack in any route that crosses the province.

Best places to visit in Pakistan in January

  • Hingol National Park: the Makran coast is at its most comfortable in winter, when you can walk to the mud volcanoes, the Princess of Hope rock formation and the beach at Kund Malir without summer heat. Our 8 Days Balochistan Hingol National Park Tour runs in this season.
  • Karachi and Makli: the city's markets and seafront, and the vast Makli necropolis near Thatta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are easy to explore in the cool months.
  • Mohenjo-daro: the ruined Indus Valley city near Larkana is best seen between November and February, before the heat of Sindh returns.
  • Malam Jabba in Swat: one of Pakistan's best-known ski resorts, where January usually brings the most reliable snow cover.
  • Hunza in winter: quiet villages, clear skies and frozen streams for anyone who does not mind the cold.

Is Hunza open in January

Yes. The Karakoram Highway to Karimabad is kept open through winter, with short closures after heavy snowfall that are usually cleared within a day. Many seasonal guesthouses shut until spring and boat trips on Attabad Lake stop, so we book hotels that stay open and heated.

Skardu is reachable by road or on flights from Islamabad, but winter flights are often cancelled when cloud sits in the valley. High routes such as the Babusar Pass, the Deosai Plains and the jeep track to Fairy Meadows are closed by snow until early summer.

What to pack for January

  • For the north: a down jacket, thermal layers, insulated boots and gloves. Heating in mountain villages can be basic.
  • For the south: light layers for warm afternoons and a sweater for cool evenings on the coast.
  • Paperwork: foreign travellers heading into Balochistan may need a No Objection Certificate (NOC). We check the current rules and arrange it where required.
