Why visit Karachi
Karachi is home to more than 20 million people and served as Pakistan's first capital from 1947 to 1959. Its ports handle most of the country's foreign trade, and that long history as a meeting point shows in its mix of communities, languages and cooking. Many travellers find it the most cosmopolitan city in Pakistan.
It is also the natural base for southern Pakistan, with ancient Thatta, Makli and the Balochistan coast all within reach.

- Empress Market and Saddar: the old colonial centre, with a Victorian market hall at its heart.
- Clifton Beach: the city's seafront, busiest around sunset.

Things to do in Karachi
Food is the reason many people come back. Burns Road is Karachi's best-known food street, famous for nihari, haleem and rich desserts, and the city's seafood is some of the freshest in the country.
Spend a morning walking the colonial streets of Saddar, an afternoon in the National Museum, and the evening by the sea at Clifton. With a local guide, the city's size becomes far easier to handle.
Best time to visit Karachi
December to February is the most comfortable period, with dry, pleasant days and cool evenings. November and March are good too. Summers are hot and humid, and monsoon rain falls between late June and September, when heavy showers can slow the city's traffic.
