1 Day Islamabad City Tour

Cultural & Heritage

The heritage sites in Pakistan span more than 4,000 years, from the Indus city of Mohenjo-daro and Buddhist Taxila to Mughal Lahore and the tombs of Makli. Our cultural and heritage tours pair these landmarks with bazaars, food and expert local guides, on day trips from Lahore and Islamabad or longer journeys across the country.

Why take a cultural tour of Pakistan

Pakistan sits where the Indus Valley Civilisation, Gandharan Buddhism, the Mughal Empire and the trade roads of Central Asia met. The result is a country of Bronze Age cities, Buddhist monasteries, Mughal forts and gardens, and busy bazaars where crafts are still made by hand. Cultural tourism in Pakistan is also about people: the food of Lahore, Pashtun hospitality in Peshawar and qawwali at the Sufi shrines stay with you as long as any monument.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Pakistan

  • Mohenjo-daro: the ruins of an Indus Valley city around 4,500 years old, near Larkana in Sindh. See Mohenjo Daro.
  • Taxila: layers of ancient cities and Buddhist sites a short drive from Islamabad.
  • Takht-i-Bahi and Sahr-i-Bahlol: a hilltop Buddhist monastery near Mardan, with the remains of an ancient town close by.
  • Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens: the heart of Mughal Lahore.
  • Makli, Thatta: one of the largest necropolises in the world, about 100 km east of Karachi.
  • Rohtas Fort: a massive 16th-century fortress near Jhelum.

Best places for heritage tours in Pakistan

Lahore is the natural place to start, with the Badshahi Mosque, built by the emperor Aurangzeb between 1671 and 1673 opposite the Lahore Fort, and the lanes of the Walled City. Our 1 Day Lahore Cultural Tour is an easy introduction.

Further north, the 3 Days Islamabad Taxila Peshawar trip joins the capital with Gandhara and the old city of Peshawar. In the south, 2 Days Karachi and Makli pairs Pakistan's largest city with the carved tombs of Makli.

Karachi itself adds a different chapter, with colonial-era stone buildings, busy markets and the white marble Mazar-e-Quaid, the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In Peshawar, the Qissa Khwani Bazaar takes its name from the storytellers who once entertained passing traders.

Best time for a cultural tour

  • October to March: the most comfortable months for Lahore, Sindh and the Gandhara sites, with mild days and cool evenings.
  • April to September: the plains grow very hot, so many travellers pair a short city visit with the cooler mountains of the north.
