Popular Street Food in Lahore

When start using social media, I befriends with mainly Lahories. They invited me to visit Lahore time and again. Though I didn’t manage to go there but still we make a list of foods that I will try there. This is our favourite hobby to make and modify the list. Although I’m not a foodie, but I wanna try all the delicacies in Lahore which is unquestionably a foodie hotspot. Let me tell you about some street food that someone can eat only in Lahore.

Channay

Channay is quite well-known in Lahore. Chickpeas or channay is the most popular and traditional food of the city. Lahoreans usually eat Channay with naan, Kulcha or khameeri roti in breakfast. Lahore never disappoints a foodie as Channay are available everywhere.

Das Kulcha

Das Kulcha was the complimentary breakfast item in Lahore about three decades ago. Some elderly Lahoris tell that people from Amritsar and surroundings came to Lahore on weekends to eat Das Kulcha, before partition. Das Kulcha is rapidly fading tradition of Lahore.

Halwa Puri

Halwa Puri is purely desi breakfast item in Lahore. Old Lahore is a bustling hub of Halwa Puri. This street food can be found alongside the roads. Halwa and puri is a perfect breakfast for Lahoreans to begin a lazy Sunday.

Paye

Paye is a popular dish among Lahoreans. The hooves of goats, sheep, or even buffalos are favourite for making Paye. People enjoy paye in breakfast with Naan, Kulcha or khameeri roti.

Pathoray

Pathoray, served with chollay (similar to channay or chickpeas) and achaar in breakfast. It resembles with roti or paratha but different in taste. The best place to eat Pathoray is Anarkali in Old Lahore or in Icchra Bazar.

Katlammay

Katlama is a type desi bread. Tomato paste, chilli paste, lentils and spices spread on the roti for frying. It is a popular street food in Lahore, a poor man’s pizza. This huge orange coloured bread is good in taste. Watching Katlama making is an entertaining activity. A Katlama is enough for three to four foodies. The best place for Katlama is near Data Darbar and Food Street in Anarkali.

Laddu Peethi

Laddu Peethi is a unique traditional Lahori street food. If a foodie wants to enjoy this delicacy, he must locate the specific Cart serving Laddu Peethi. It is made with white, yellow and gram lentils, soaked in water. Later on salt, garlic, ginger, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, carom seeds, roasted cumin, and roasted coriander are added in the batter. Laddu Peethi is garnished with white radish, carrot and cabbage. It is served with a sweet, sour and spicy sauce of dry plum, apricot and tamarind.

Dahi Bhallay

Dahi bhallay is a most favourite street food in Lahore. Bhalla and Phulki is made from Lentil flour, then mix both with yoghurt, spices, sauces and salad. The best place to enjoy Dahi Bhalla is Regal Chowk or Anarkali Bazar.

Lassi

Lassi is a popular traditional drink. This drink never gets out of fashion. Lahoreans take it in breakfast. Sweet (meethi lassi) or salty (namkeen lassi) are favourite versions. A foodie can enjoy the best Lassi at Feeqa in Gawal Mandi, Lahore. His pairay wali lassi is undoubtedly amazing. It’s a bit heavy and can make you sleepy afterward. This refreshing drink is ideal for hot summer days.

Rabri Falooda

A traditional street food, made with milk, cardamom powder, rose syrup, noodles and so many variations. Milk must be curdled until thickens and its colour changes to brownish. Nowadays it is served with ricotta cheese ice cream, almonds and pistachios on top. Delicious ice cream, noodles, jelly, sugar syrup and dry fruit. This Lahori street food is very delectable.
