Ranikot Fort

Ranikot Fort is located in Jamshoro District of Sindh and known as The Great Wall of Sindh. The most visited fort is thought to be the largest fort in the world. Ranikot fort is located 90 kilometres to the north of Hyderabad on the Indus Highway which connects Karachi and Sann. It takes one hour to get there on a rough track of 21 kilometres which leads to the fort. Sann is the nearest town to the fort. The fort lies in the Kirthar National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as a historical landmark worthy of preservation.

The Fort is the most popular tourist destination in Pakistan. Nawab Wali Muhammed Leghari constructed it during the Talpur dynasty. Although archaeologists believe it was built in the 17th century. The significant Ranikor Fort stretches for 31 kilometres. It reflects contours to connect numerous forlorn summits of the Kirthar hills. Three of the many castles that comprise the wall of the fort which are semicircular in shape. However the northern boundary is naturally steep and mountainous, with walls enclosing the other three sides. A smaller fort within the larger one is called “Meeri Fort” which is located about three kilometres from the Sann gate.

The initial structure was built with stone and lime mortar in a zigzag pattern with four rhomboid shaped entry gates. The Ranikot Fort has four gates.

  1. Sann Gate
  2. Amri Gate
  3. Shah-Pere Gate
  4. Mohan Gate

Two of the gates are cut by the Sann river. The first gate on the Western side is difficult to approach due to its proximity to the river. The other two southern entry gates feature floral decorations and carved stones. The Sann gate is in good condition and can be scaled from either side to the top of the fort for stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Meeri gate can also be used to enter the fort.

Nawab Wali Muhammed Leghari, the Sindhi Prime Minister during the Talpur dynasty, began the initial restoration of the Ranikot Fort. The Sann Gate complex, the defensive wall that extended south to include the Masjid and the small Meeri fort were all restored. Later on Dadu District government, Sindh Department of Culture and Archaeology Department of Pakistan were in charge of the restoration procedure.

As mentioned above, Ranikot Fort is a popular tourist attraction for both domestic and international visitors. From the top of the fortified walls, the view is captivating as the landscape is truly breathtaking. The area around Ranikot Fort is generally desolate, but the fort stands out and demonstrates its grandeur.
